Lesson 5: Trees and Haystacks (Objects, Position, and Perspective)

The instructor demonstrates drawing a single tree, as shown in the example drawing, and directs children to copy the drawing.

  1. Use a soft pencil with a blunt point.
  2. Make the lines heavy.
  3. Shade the top of the tree first in a solid mass, and do not use an outline.
  4. Draw the trunk.
  5. Draw a little grass around the trunk, which serves as the rest line.
  6. Have children practice drawing their own trees, until they master it.

The instructor demonstrates drawing a single haystack, as shown in the example drawing, and directs children to copy the drawing.

  1. Use a soft pencil with a blunt point.
  2. Make the lines heavy.
  3. Sketch the top curve of the haystack.
  4. Add a little shading at the sides.
  5. Draw a little grass around the haystack, which serves as the rest line.
  6. Have children practice drawing their own haystacks, until they master it.

Complete the following drill exercises. The instructor demonstrates drawing trees and haystacks and directs children to copy the drawings. Children should practice these drawings over the week.

  1. Draw a haystack. Place one tree to the right.
  2. Draw a haystack. Place one tree to the left.
  3. Draw a haystack. Place two trees farther from the viewer.
  4. Draw a haystack. Place one tree to the right and two trees farther from the viewer.
  5. Draw a haystack. Place one tree to the right and three trees farther from the viewer.
  6. Draw a haystack. Place one tree to the right, one tree at the left, one tree farther from the viewer, and one tree nearer the viewer.
